22.04.2010: Earth Day

On Thursday, April 22, Earth Day celebrated its 40th anniversary.  To celebrate this day, Manly Environment Centre promoted the use of reusable coffee cups in Manly. Australians use approximately 500 million disposable cups a year – that’s 951 per minute.

Manly alone is estimated to consume more than 750,000 disposable cups per year.  Most of these cups cannot be recycled (due to the plastic lining and lids) and take over 50 years to biodegrade.  Reusable cups, however, help save trees, lower CO2 emissions, reduce landfill, and save energy.

On Earth Day, Manly Environment Centre had an informational display and a visual installation at Manly Wharf to encourage us all to break the disposable cup habit.  Partnering on this event were the International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) Green Team and staff, KeepCup, and Sydney Ferries.  In addition, local cafes including Barefoot Coffee Traders, Bean Rush, Fusion Point, ICMS Courtyard Café, Red Earth Coffee participated by offering a variety of discounts to patrons who brought their own reusable cup on Earth Day.
