06.05.2012: National Permaculture Day

Permaculture is the art of gardening naturally. It has been described as "a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature", and is concerned with self-sustaining human settlements and farming systems.

Visit the Manly Environment Centre this Sunday to celebrate National Permaculture Day with a line-up of guest speakers and panel Q and A.

Speakers will include the environment centre's Jason Saltearn, who will unlock the community and school gardens of the Northern Sydney region - where they are, what they are growing and how to get involved.

Permaculture Sydney North (PSN) co-ordinator Myriam Pitre will discuss how growing food communally can help a whole community to grow.

And Emily Fewster, from North Balgowlah Montessori preschool, will reveal the joys of chooks in the backyard, and the tasty Garden in a Box.

There will be a Q and A panel discussion, representatives from local garden projects,  and a short video showing the re-claiming of desertified land in Jordan.

The environment centre and the adjacent Manly Food Co-op will be open from 1pm to 4pm for National Permaculture Day.
