The launch of the 'Beauty of Biodiversity' - Art Exhibition was a great sucess. Around 100 guests admired the work of local artists. The paintings and sculptures captured the beauty of Manly's extraordinary biodiversity.
The combined display of the Manly Environment Centre, Manly’s Penguin Wardens, Eco Divers, Sydney Wildlife, Balgowlah Heights Public School and the North Head Sanctuary Foundation in the ALIVE exhibition at the Australian Museum was a great opportunity to show Manly’s rich biodiversity.
This event in Cabbage Tree Bay, Manly, brought government, local organisations and local people together to involve them in an environmental project.
New South Wales Nature Conservation Council annual event Walk Against Warming 2010 attracted 10,000 people to Bellmore Park in Sydney to march around the city to highlight the need to act urgently on climate change. Amongst the participants were Manly Environment Centre, the Wilderness Society and Chip Busters. Manly Environment Centre had penguins and jellyfish and frogs to highlight the International Year of Biodiversity.
Close to 1500 people discovered the 'Living Lab' at North Head Sanctuary, an event for the 'National Science Week' and to celebrate the 'International Year of Biodiversity' organised by the Manly Environment Centre. Gorgeous weather provided a great day out for all ages to enjoy numerous activities.
Located at Manly Dam, the Manly Hydraulics Laboratory (MHL) is a business within the Department of Public Works and Services. It provides consulting services in the area of water, coastal and environmental solutions. MHL's services include:-
Surfers at Queenscliff, North Steyne and Manly do more than patrol the beaches - they are also setting an environmental example. In 2007, on the initiative of then Mayor Peter Macdonald, the clubhouses were supplied with solar hot water and photovoltaic cells, allowing them to generate all the power they need.
Healthy & Environmentally Friendly Food and Shopping
In April 1997 Manly Food Co-op opened its doors to the Manly community. Keelah Lam was the driving force behind the idea. Along with a group of like-minded community members, the group obtained a development grant from the Manly Council, started a newsletter and the Manly Food Cooperative was launched. Twelve years down the track, the Co-op continues as a community-owned not-for-profit business providing organic, bulk, waste-free shopping as an alternative to mainstream supermarkets.
A Passive House in an Active Environment
Introduction
As land becomes scarcer in our major and regional cities, lots with ideal solar access will become the exception rather than the norm. We must be able to design passive solarbuildings on these lots, to ensure they are naturally comfortable and have minimal negative environmental impacts. This project stands on a coastal site with less than ideal orientation, and which is flood affected - these characteristics combined to impose difficulties which required some unusual responses. But as time goes by, many of these design responses will become commonplace.

Nominate your Unsung Hero for the 2013 Eco Award
Do you know someone who is working hard to protect Manly’s unique natural environment?
“Now in its eigth year, the ‘Manly Environment Centre Eco Award’ is presented in recognition of contributions to the conservation of Manly’s environment,” said Manly Mayor Jean Hay.
“Nominations are sought on behalf of members of the community who have volunteered their time and efforts to benefit Manly’s diverse and valuable natural habitat."
The award is open to people from all walks of life. Nominees must be over 18 years of age.
The recipient of the award will receive an original artwork as well as public recognition for their work and achievements.
“Nominate your ‘Unsung Hero’ - an ordinary person doing extraordinary things,” said Cllr Hay.
